There is an issue with a bunch of dell laptops (Vostro 3550, Inspiron n5110 included) where the laptop display is not detected.you should do some workarounds that you do in the meantime though.
1. download dell bios update from http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?docid=588391&DoNotRedirect=y
2. install (upgrade) windows 8.1 on your pc
3. Connect an external monitor or TV to the computer using the VGA or HDMI ports. Most recently produced flat panel TVs have HDMI capability, so this should be a resource for customers who do not have an external computer monitor available to them.
